To prospective students

Welcome to our prospectus for the distance learning degree programmes in South African and Zulu History offered by AZWHS in conjunction with Calamus International University since 2001. These degrees were developed as a result of the Society’s research material being increasingly used by students, colleges and universities worldwide. As you will see, these degrees offer members of the Society a flexible and accessible means of obtaining their own Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in this unique field. Whether you are an historian, a geographer or someone with a general interest in the history of Southern Africa, these courses will enable you to enquire even more knowledge in the subject, and at the same time, gain an academic degree. It is also possible, where required, for a student to specialise in the Anglo Zulu war of 1879.

The Bachelor’s degree course will cover three academic years, part time, followed by a written examination. The Master’s degree will cover between one and two academic years. Each academic year will consist of two semesters (terms). Students can extend or shorten their period of study depending on individual circumstances.

Students who complete the Master’s degree in South African and Zulu history will be encouraged to study further with a view to submitting a Doctoral thesis.

Study will be by distance learning supported by lecture and tutorials. Lectures will normally take place at various UK locations with tutorials usually taking place at Tenterden in Kent. Special arrangements will be made for non-UK students. The Degree Faculty is highly experienced and our tutors have many years of academic and distance learning experience. Three of our tutors are qualified to Doctorate supervisory level.

Degree course fees include all necessary books, tapes, films and associated course material. 

The Degree Faculty’s academic team and associated researchers have worked hard to ensure these degrees are of a very high quality, as well as ensuring that their content is both stimulating and absorbing.
